Calucem saves energy and looks after the environment through its production process

PULA – Earth Day has been officially celebrated around the world on April 22, ever since 1992 when the UN Environment Conference in Rio de Janeiro established the Sustainable Development Program. However, the warning about the need for the responsibility of all mankind to preserve the planet goes back to the past, more precisely to the 70s, when Earth Day was established in the United States. One of the main goals of its celebration is to raise the level of environmental awareness and encourage active involvement in the fight to preserve the planet.

Pula’s Calucem is one of the companies that promotes these values on a daily basis through it’s socially responsible business as well as the company’s strategic guidelines that paves the way for successful results. Environmental protection and occupational safety are areas in which Calucem operates systematically and thoroughly.

The integrated management system consists of various procedures and environmental programs for energy management and energy related processes, ie measuring and monitoring energy consumption in order to manage energy as efficiently as possible. The management basis of the Calucem cement plant is based on the ISO management system standards which include ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and ISO 50001 integrated into a single management system. This way Calucem significantly contributes to the reduction of environmental pollution and indentifies all aspects that could negatively affect the environment whilst monitoring, planning and implementation of programs to reduce these.

According to ISO 14001, a number of factors have been identified in Calucem that are affected by operational preventive and corrective actions, but also by monitoring and applying the best available techniques to reduce their impact on the environment. The ISO 50001 standard was introduced at the plant in 2016, and with its requirements, the focus on energy efficiency, ie the reduction of energy consumption and its production from renewable sources. In this way, it indirectly affects the environment, since by reducing energy consumption, it reduces emissions of various harmful gases (CO2, SO2, NOx, etc.). Continuous monitoring of the fuel and other energy sources consumption, improvements to the processes, using waste energy and usage of devices with higher energy efficiency contributes to the reduction of energy consumption, and harmful emissions.

In an effort to further reduce its environmental impact, Calucem plans and develops new projects such as electricity generation from its own solar panels, and plans to use even more waste heat from its production process. Let us add to this that Calucem has invested 1,5 million HRK in environmental protection in 2020, with the aim of reducing noise and dust, and these investments continued this year and will amount to almost 600,000 HRK. In addition, for the eighth year in a row, Pula cement plant has been granted the right to use the ZeLEn trademark, which confirms that it exclusively buys and uses energy from renewable sources, ie the so-called “green energy”.
